Book Review: The Shadows Between Us - A Journey of Power, Ambition, Deception, and Love

Tricia Levenseller's captivating young adult fantasy novel, The Shadows Between Us, takes readers on an enthralling journey through the intricate web of power, ambition, deception, and love. Set in a kingdom, the story revolves around Alessandra, a cunning and ambitious young woman whose determination to become queen drives her to navigate a treacherous world of political intrigue. What I found most intriguing is as the plot unfolds, readers are immersed in a thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of power, the complexities of ambition, the art of deception, and the transformative nature of love.

Review:

I wanted to love this book, I really did. I saw it all over my social media. Now, I do want to say that even though this book definitely has its flaws, it's not a terrible book to read. I just felt like it could have been executed a lot better. I expected it to be different, mainly due to the hype on social media. I was a little disappointed, but not to the extent that I absolutely hated and could not finish it. I have read worse books, and this was honestly just an average read. I did, however, enjoy the themes that presented themselves throughout the novel (I'm a huge fan of themes) and really just want to talk about those for a bit.

Alessandra's unwavering desire for power serves as the driving force behind her actions. Unbound by societal expectations, she refuses to let her gender or social status define her worth. Her goal is to ascend to the throne, and she employs her intelligence and charm to manipulate and win over others. However, her pursuit of power is not without consequences. The court is filled with characters vying for power, resulting in schemes, betrayals, and dangerous situations. As Alessandra becomes embroiled in the world of politics, she is faced with the realities of her choices and the impact they have on those around her.

Alessandra's ambition is deeply rooted in her desire to rise above her social limitations. She refuses to settle for less, determined to make her mark in a world that seeks to confine her. However, her ambition often blinds her to the ethical dilemmas that arise. She must grapple with the tradeoffs between her own desires and the greater good of the kingdom. Levenseller's exploration of the relationship between ambition and morality serves as a cautionary tale, reminding readers that unchecked ambition can lead to unforeseen consequences.

While power, ambition, and deception dominate much of the narrative, it is ultimately love that drives Alessandra's transformation and growth. Initially dismissive of love, she sees it as a weakness that hinders one's ambitions. However, as Alessandra becomes more intimately involved with the Shadow King, her perspective shifts. Their complicated relationship challenges her beliefs and values, revealing a deeper connection that transcends their individual goals. Through their interactions, Alessandra learns that love can provide meaning and purpose, leading her to question the true cost of her ambition.

I really do feel like these themes make up for some of the shortcomings in the novel, however, that's just my opinion. Alessandra's determination to rise above her social limitations and make her mark in a world that seeks to confine her is commendable. However, the novel sometimes falls into the trap of oversimplifying the complexities of ambition. Alessandra's ambition often blinds her to the ethical dilemmas that arise, and while this serves as a cautionary tale, the exploration lacks the depth and nuance required to fully convey the intricacies of the subject.

Another issue lies in the romantic dynamic between Alessandra and the Shadow King, Kallias. Initially intriguing, their relationship gradually becomes repetitive and fails to deliver the emotional depth that the narrative promises. It relies on familiar tropes, and the development of their connection becomes predictable. This lackluster romance detracts from the overall impact of the story and leaves the reader longing for more genuine emotional engagement.

Furthermore, the world-building in The Shadows Between Us is somewhat lacking. While the story is set in a fascinating kingdom, the descriptions and visual representation of this world remain vague. The absence of detailed world-building hampers the reader's ability to fully immerse themselves in the setting, making it challenging to form a clear mental picture of the environment and its inhabitants.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:
  1. Gripping and Immersive Storytelling: Tricia Levenseller's narrative style keeps readers hooked from beginning to end, immersing them in a richly detailed world filled with political intrigue and fascinating characters.
  2. Complex and Empowering Protagonist: Alessandra, to me, was a lot of things that I didn't like. However, I will say that she is a compelling protagonist whose ambition, wit, and determination that makes her a force to be reckoned with. Her refusal to be confined by societal expectations and her unwavering pursuit of power create a strong and empowering character arc.
  3. Thought-Provoking Exploration of Themes: I loved the themes in this book. The novel delves deep into themes such as power, ambition, deception, and love, offering readers the opportunity to reflect on the consequences of these driving forces in both individual lives and society as a whole.
Cons:
  1. Some of the Plot is "Eh": I felt that some of the plot was just so boring and predictable. Alessandra comes off as the antagonist who is sure of herself and built this intricate plan to kill the Shadow King and rule over the six kingdoms, but her ideas are so plain.
  2. Lack of world-building: There's a noticeable absence of world-building in this piece. There are some vague terms throughout the novel, but aside from that, there's a lack of clarity regarding the visual representation of this world that Levenseller created, so I personally had a hard time trying to figure out what exactly this world was supposed to look like.
  3. Another cliche: The dynamic between Alessandra and Kallias was all over the place, and yet, it felt like every other trope I ever read. I really enjoyed the push and pull they had in the beginning of the novel, but as the story progressed, it got repetitive.
  4. A "Slytherin" Complex: I know Levenseller compared Alessandra to a Slytherin, but I felt like she threw together all the worst traits of a Slytherin and presented us with an almost unlikable main character. Alessandra is supposed to be cunning and deceiving, however, she mostly came off as a jerk.

Conclusion:
Tricia Levenseller's The Shadows Between Us offers a captivating and thought-provoking young adult fantasy experience. The novel presents a gripping story filled with political intrigue, complex characters, and an exploration of themes such as power, ambition, deception, and love. Alessandra, the ambitious and determined protagonist, challenges societal expectations and embarks on a quest for power that leads her to face the consequences of her actions. While the novel succeeds in immersing readers in its world and creating an empowering protagonist, it also has some shortcomings. The plot at times feels predictable and lacks excitement, and the world-building could have been more detailed. Additionally, the romantic dynamic between Alessandra and Kallias becomes repetitive, and Alessandra's character may come across as unlikable due to her flaws. Despite these drawbacks, The Shadows Between Us remains an engaging and thought-provoking read, providing readers with an enthralling exploration of ambition, power, and the transformative nature of love.

What are My Favorite Books? - Top Ten Fiction

I will add a warning, a lot of my favorite reads have so many grammatical errors, it's not even funny. But I find them to have an interesting plot and characters that are memorable, I can't find myself caring too much. Now, I understand the books on this list should probably be wayyy different. Some people expect to see Harry Potter or The Hunger Games or Twilight (which are all fantastic novels) or even the classics, such as The Great Gatsby or Frankenstein, or Pride and Prejudice . While those are all great reads and probably should be on my top ten list, they're not my all-time favorite go-tos. Some of these books/series are ones that I doubt many people have even heard of. I read the most books when I was in junior high, searching up free Amazon Kindle eBooks, which some are 100% on this list. So, these all hold a special place in my heart and are the ones I usually go to when I need a metaphorical hug from an old friend. 1. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley The firs...
